Non Profit Organization Los Angeles, California

anne frank house museum

The building was opened as a museum to the public in 1960. After the war, the previous hiding place at Prinsengracht 263 and the neighbouring properties had fallen into disrepair. In 1950, the Berghaus textile factory wanted to buy the houses on the corner of the Prinsengracht and the Westermarkt. Berghaus planned to demolish the buildings and construct a new factory building.Otto Frank struggled when the demolition was announced. He was renting the building from Wessels, the owner, and they had agreed upon his right of first refusal. However, they lacked the funds for proper restoration work.In 1954, Otto Frank reluctantly sold the building to Berghaus.

Anne’s story, told in her own words, comes to life through rare artifacts, unique documents, and photographs. Visitors view a facsimile of her famous diary and several other examples of her original writing that culminated in what has become one of the most famous and well-read books ever. The museum, which opened in 1960, also includes two adjacent buildings.

Publication of the diary

The University provided the advance funding and made up the shortage of the Anne Frank House. If you enjoy exploring the historic homes of famous, and not-so-famous people, there are a number of historic residences in Southern California that are open to the public as museums. Most of them are City, State and National Historic Landmarks There is some overlap with LA Local History Museums. In one of her early diary entries, dated July 11, 1942, Anne wrote, “Daddy, Mummy, and Margot can’t get used to the sound of the Westertoren clock yet, which tells us the time every quarter of an hour. I loved it from the start, and especially in the night it’s like a faithful friend.” The church is mentioned frequently in Anne’s diary - the clock tower could be seen from the Secret Annex. The exhibit features an actual recording of the Westertoren clock, which chimes every 15 minutes.

If you are traveling by car, the Museum offers free underground parking for visitors. A reproduction of the original diary that Anne began to write on her 13th birthday while in hiding. The Anne Frank House has around one hundred staff members. We tell the story of Anne Frank, both in the museum and outside. We create educational material, manage the collection, and research the history of Anne Frank.

Every Tuesday at 10am CET all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. You can opt for a museum visit or a museum visit with an introductory program. Subsequently, the building became a warehouse, and the front warehouse with its wide stable-like doors was used to house horses. At the start of the 20th century, a manufacturer of household appliances occupied the building, succeeded in 1930 by a producer of piano rolls, who vacated the property by 1939.

Reproduction of the original diary

Anne’s diary is a testament to why young people's voices matter. The Diary of a Young Girl has been translated into more than 70 languages and is one of the most widely read works of nonfiction in the world. Anne’s words continue to inspire readers of all ages with its timeless and timely message of resilience, youthful optimism, and the need to stand together against hatred in all its forms. On April 26, 2022, The Los Angeles City Council adopted a resolution declaring May 12 to be Anne Frank Day in the City of Los Angeles. The day honors Anne, her father Otto (whose birthday is May 12), and the nearly 1.5 million children who perished during the Holocaust.

There is also a Garden House on the property that was occupied by Dion Neutra and his family. Tours of the VDL House are conducted on Saturdays by architecture students from Cal Poly Pomona. Anne is an extraordinary new immersive exhibit on the life and legacy of Anne Frank.

The Museum of Tolerance will MOT-ivate you and your family with thrilling exhibits, ongoing events, and programs that bring history to life and draw parallels to current events. After exiting the theatre, visitors can see the infinity wall is as black as coal. On display is a concentration camp uniform, while nearby four video screens tell the final, terrible chapter of Anne Frank’s story. Anne and those hiding with her were betrayed by an informant, who remains unknown to this day.

The Anne Frank Foundation was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, with the primary aim of collecting enough funds to purchase and restore the building. In October of that year, the company who owned it donated the building to the foundation as a goodwill gesture. The collected funds were then used to purchase the house next door, Number 265, shortly before the remaining buildings on the block were pulled down as planned.

Shortly after the book was published, visitors were shown around by the employees who had hidden the families and could see the secret rooms. However, by 1955, the company had moved to new premises and the entire block to which the building belonged was sold to a single estate agent who served a demolition order with the intention of building a factory on the space. A campaign to save the building and to list it as a protected monument was started by the Dutch paper Het Vrije Volk on 23 November 1955. The building was saved by campaigners who staged a protest outside the building on the day of demolition.

Mr. Kugler, you see, thought it would be better to place a cupboard in front of our door, (there are a lot of searches being carried out for hidden bicycles,) but then of course a cupboard on hinges that can open like a door. Mr. Voskuijl built the piece of furniture.’ Anne Frank wrote in her diary on 21 August 1942. In the museum you will receive information about Anne Frank, the other people in hiding in the Secret Annex, the helpers, as well as background information on the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews. Anne could see a chestnut tree through the only window that wasn’t blacked out in the attic. As long as this exists, I thought, and I may live to see it, this sunshine, the cloudless skies, while this lasts I cannot be unhappy.” A double flight of stairs leads visitors past an etched image of Anne’s beloved chestnut tree.

Norway cruise ship rescue ends as vessel sails to port live updates

However, Viking Ocean officially announced, that the ship's delivery would be delayed by the shipbuilder Fincantieri. Rudders and propellers were designed and developed by the Rolls-Royce Hydrodynamic Research Centre in Sweden. Energy-efficient engines and exhaust gas cleaning system enable the vessel to meet harsh environmental regulations.

Passengers in this category receive a welcome bottle of Champagne, and mini-bars in these cabins are stocked with alcohol and beer, replenished daily. Passengers also get two reservations each at Manfredi's and The Chef's Table, as well as free pressing and shoe polishing. Rescuers have evacuated 418 people by helicopter from the Viking Sky cruise ship, a day after the vessel was stranded in rough seas off Norway with 1,300 passengers and crew on board.

The NMA indicated in a press release that while oil in the tanks was relatively low, it was within set limits. But as the ship crossed rocky seas, movement of oil in the tanks triggered an alarm. Those involved in the rescue mission hadn't experienced a rescue this intense before.

Cabin Review

To get to the life jackets, the crew member said employees had to open doors onto open decks and into the wind and form human chains to distribute the life jackets while the ship was leaning perilously close to the frigid water below. Despite the danger, the crew member said some passengers rushed to be airlifted, fearing the ship would sink before rescue. According to a crew member's account, exclusive to USA TODAY, the ship's four engines began shutting down in the midst of a storm that started late Friday. We disembarked in Rome but booked the optional post-cruise extension. The hotel was substandard (little hot water in the bathroom, lights that mysteriously came on at 320 am) but Rome is a magical, indoor-outdoor art museum, filled with history everywhere. We've previously sailed on Norweigian, Princess, Carnival and Azamara.

Evacuation of passengers has ended as cruise ship travels to Norway port

Alexus Sheppard posted a video on Twitter of severe tilting due to the rough waters. "We're waiting for evacuation by helicopter," she wrote with the hashtags #VikingSky and #Mayday. Although the crew member described the crew as well-trained for emergencies, he said he called his family at one point when the Wi-Fi was working "to say goodbye. I was thinking it was going to sink when we listed." The ship was visiting the Norwegian towns and cities of Narvik, Alta, Tromso, Bodo and Stavanger before its scheduled arrival Tuesday in the London-area port of Tilbury on the River Thames. The Viking Sky, a vessel with gross tonnage of 47,800, was on a 12-day trip that began March 14 in the western Norwegian city of Bergen, according to cruisemapper.com. We opted for "A Day in Tuscany" and everything was charming but for the longish bus ride.

The town is the stuff of paintings and murals; we took lots of pictures of the bright boats reflecting off the glassy water. Twenty people sustained injuries on the vessel, which was being tossed about by wind and waves, Viking Ocean Cruises said. All are being treated at medical facilities in Norway, or have already been discharged. In addition, all passengers must be fully vaccinated (boosters are strongly recommended), and they may be asked to provide proof of vaccination prior to embarkation. Celebrate special events and milestone moments at sea with Viking Ocean Cruises.

"Throughout all of this, our first priority was for the safety and well-being of our passengers and our crew," Viking Ocean Cruises said in a statement, thanking Norwegian emergency services and local residents for their support. During the day, guests feel comfortable around the ship in shorts and a t-shirt. Evenings are “elegant casual,” which mainly meansno jeans in the sit-down restaurants and the Star Theater, although that’s not the case in World Cafe. The cruise ship experienced an engine failure while sailing from Tromsø to Stavanger in Norway, in March 2019.

Expand your horizons on our award-winning, all-veranda small ship, with just 930 guests, allowing us to dock where larger ships cannot. Several elements of the christening ceremony paid homage to the Norwegian heritage of both the company and godmother. “Mamsen’s,” the Norwegian deli onboard Viking Sky, was also named after Ragnhild, and Gammel Opland was her favorite brand of aquavit. The legacy of the Vikings—their bravery and innovation, their elegant ships and their influence on art and culture—endures in Viking Sky. Inspired by the clean, streamlined designs of those early Viking ships and constructed of materials from the natural world, she embodies the Viking spirit through and through.

This Arctic-themed facility is part of the ship's thermal suite (within the spa complex). This relaxation area has also 1 hot tub, sauna room, heated ceramic loungers, therapeutic showers, salt-water thermal pool. No matter where you turn, you’ll find a place to whet your whistle.

People also love the Wintergarden, a bright, elegant spot right next to the main pool, where the crew serves a daily afternoon high tea. Viking OCEAN's Explorer Suite bathrooms are among the best-rated at sea. Each of those has a glass-enclosed shower-bathtub compartment with ocean views, a separate sitting area and a most spacious double-sink vanity area with plenty of storage drawers.

The vessel (Fincantieri Trieste yard/hull number 6237) has volume GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 4826 tons, max draught 6,3 m. The powerplant is based on MAN marine diesel engines (model 12V32/9L32/44) with combined output 23,52 MW (22000 hp). The registered shipowner is VIKING OCEAN CRUISES SHIP II, while the registered manager is VIKING OCEAN CRUISES LTD.

Day three brings passengers further upriver to Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri, from which the author drew inspiration for several of his novels. On day four, the ship stops at Bettendorf, Iowa, for a hop-on hop-off tour of museums, artist studios, the German American Heritage Center, and the Quad City Botanical Center. In Dubuque, Iowa, guests can take a ride on the Fenelon Place Elevator, billed as "the world's steepest, shortest scenic railway".

The Great United States itinerary celebrates America the beautiful on a 61-day adventure across 20 states, on 3 ships, and connected by 2 flights. If you love American history, then get on board our 35-day Civil War Battlefields itinerary, the first and only cruise of its kind, bringing to life the War Between the States as we traverse 13 states and sail aboard 3 ships. US river cruising offers an intimate and immersive way to discover the diverse landscapes, historic sites, and vibrant cultures along America's rivers.

Undiscovered Great Lakes

"Like all cruise lines, we are always seeking guests new to cruise and new to U.S. river cruising," said Michael Hicks, a spokesperson for American Queen Voyages. I'm also a fan of the Engine Room Bar, where I enjoyed nightly music and views of the boat's paddlewheel. But the secret lies behind a door in the bar with a sign that's barely noticeable. Pop inside, and you can make your way down to the engine room, which is open to passengers interested in learning more about how the vessel operates. A resident "riverlorian" — a historian who is well-versed in the history of the rivers on which the vessel sails — also gives several talks during each voyage.

Given that most U.S. river cruise passengers tend to be in their golden years, the pace of onboard life is as leisurely as a float down a river. I found plenty of ways to relax, from joining low-key hosted trivia and doing self-led puzzles during the day to listening to live music at night. American Cruise Lines and Viking offer river cruises in the U.S., and can be more expensive than European river cruises. Each line offers different inclusions, such as guided excursions, pre-cruise hotel accommodations, meals and beverages. Over two weeks, you'll visit Native American burial grounds and archeological sites in West Virginia and learn about the underground railroad in Ohio. You can taste bourbon and explore the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory or the Kentucky Derby Museum & Horse Park in Louisville.

10 Best Cruise Lines for Weddings

cruise wedding

If you’ve recently gotten engaged (congratulations!) and are looking into celebrating your wedding on a cruise, there are a couple of things you should decide before saying “I do”. Enjoy a unique captain-performed ceremony reinforcing the bonds that brought you together from the beginning. Celebrity Weddings can also plan your exotic wedding in over 200 destinations worldwide. Contact your Event Manager to decide which location is right for you. If you’re only inviting a few guests or if you have lots of friends to share this moment with, Signature Ceremonies are ideal for you.

Five Tips For Choosing the Perfect Destination Wedding Favor

Government regulations now allow for captains to perform legal marriages while the ships sail the seas of the world (with the exception of Celebrity Expedition®). These legal, captain-led wedding ceremonies are performed under the Maltese flag and complement our existing shipboard, shoreside, and vow renewal offerings. Our Celebrations package is offered for those who only wish to hold a reception on board, whether it’s for a wedding, welcome-aboard party, anniversary, quinceañera, Sweet Sixteen, birthday, reunion, or other event. As the date draws nearer and it’s time to send out the official invitations, you can include more information at your discretion.

DESTINATION WEDDING PLANNERS

“Generally, the cruise line includes the flowers, music, photographer, and officiant (this could be the captain) in the packages, though some of these might cost extra,” says Heather. We provide complete, worry-free coordinated cruise ship wedding packages onboard and at beautiful destinations like Bermuda, The Bahamas, The US Virgin Islands and more. Our expert wedding coordinators will take care of every detail so you can enjoy your unique wedding day. We work with the best cruise lines in the world to provide a wedding experience like no other. A legal marriage can’t be recognized in open seas, which are not under the jurisdiction of any country, unless the ship captain or officiant is also a justice of the peace, minister, or notary public. That means that most legal cruise weddings take place either onboard the ship in port or harborside, docked in a destination.

Cruises

In terms of the packages, cruise weddings are a considerable value when it comes to how much is spent on the ceremony and reception in comparison to the average land-based wedding. However, an inherent part of a cruise wedding is the cruise, which can fluctuate in price depending if the betrothed are looking to splash out on a suite or opt for a more modest cabin. Cruise wedding couples can choose to hold their ceremony in a homeport like Seattle or Miami before departure. This gives them the ability to choose their own clergy and invite day guests onboard for the afternoon before setting sail. Or they can choose a wedding in a port of call, like Mexico, either onboard the ship or at a venue like the beach of a resort. The average price for a cruise wedding falls between $7,000 and $20,000, according to GroupTravel.org, a sliver of what a land wedding normally costs (an average of $30,000).

Carnival Cruise Weddings

Unique onboard experiences, plus a range of facilities make nearly anything possible. Ocean breezes carry romance through the air when you have your wedding on a cruise. Whether the ceremony is onboard, at an exotic beach or in a garden, wedding cruises combine your love for each other with your love for travel in beautiful settings. Carnival Cruises will help you plan every detail to create memories that last a lifetime.

cruise wedding

Everyone on board and in port is going to ooh and aah at you as you sashay by in your wedding finery. This type of ceremony is also not ideal for couples who want to invite hundreds of guests or want the flexibility to select the perfect caterer, photographer, cake, florist or musicians. Just like its parks, Disney offers Fairy Tale Weddings on its ships.

However you spend it, you’ll definitely remember the moment forever. Since Carnival makes fun memories happen every day, just imagine what we can do for an event like your wedding, honeymoon, vow renewal ceremony… or even the proposal itself! Pick a cruise itinerary that doesn’t rush your introduction to married life but isn’t too long or too expensive for your guests. A four- to seven-day cruise gives time for the ceremony and doesn’t require too much of their vacation time. Ultimately, if you're a person who wants a hassle-free wedding, with a one-stop shop for planning and a built-in honeymoon, then swapping vows ashore, in port or at sea might just be your dream affair. Name a popular cruise line and chances are you can get married on one of its ships.

Most of our wedding and event packages include essentials such as an indoor or deck venue for ceremonies, reserved indoor area for receptions with food and beverage service, floral arrangements for the couple, cake and champagne, and a photographer. Imagine saying your vows under the blue skies of an exotic port of call - or on embarkation day before you set sail. Introducing our Signature Deck Weddings. There are two unique packages that can be customized for your wedding. Please see all our options starting on page 12 for pricing and marriage license requirements. The Romantic and Deluxe packages add additional photography services, a larger cake, specialty dinner, and even pre-wedding salon services for the couple.

PLAN NOW OR LEARN MORE

Each port has their own requirements to obtain a marriage license, which couples are responsible for handling. Documentation should be completed and submitted approximately two to three months prior to any legal ceremony at sea. Here's our guide on everything you need to know about cruise weddings. Many cruise lines and companies can accommodate weddings, including Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean, among others. These cruise lines offer a variety of routes and price points so it’s often best to work with a travel agent to find the exact cruise that best suits your desired event.

The good news is that with these all-inclusive packages, you know exactly how much your at-sea wedding will cost from the beginning. Examples of extra-fee add-ons include videography, photography or live entertainment at the ceremony or reception (Carnival Cruises charges $150-plus for some tunes to accompany your celebration). When Kelsey isn’t planning you can find going out to eat with friends or grabbing wine at a local spot in Tampa, she loves walking around downtown and visiting the new shops in the area.

If the wedding occurs on Castaway Cay, the ceremony will be performed by a Bahamian official, but it is not a legal marriage; the couple will need to already be legally married before the ship departs the U.S. A Disney Cruise wedding is perhaps the ultimate fantasy-made-reality ceremony, depending on your tastes (of course). It's also a great option for anyone whose wedding party includes children as well as those entering blended marriages with young kids.

Your specific cost will depend on which cruise wedding package you choose and which inclusions and add-ons you select. This is a fantastic option because you won't have the time pressure of embarkation day, nor will you have to give up any fun activities or beach time in port. Fill out the form below and our founder, Sarah Chancey, will be in touch with you shortly!

I Only Go on Cruises That Stop at Disney's Private Island Castaway Cay

disney christmas cruise

When I book, I always make sure Disney's private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay, is on the port of call. If you need assistance with deciding whether a holiday sailing on Disney Cruise Line is right for your family, contact one of our specialist travel agents for consultation and free quote. Another holiday scene includes the sand snowmen, welcoming you ashore.

Disney Characters in Holiday Attire

It’s worth noting that If you’re looking to sail on a themed Disney cruise, we suggest the Halloween on the High Seas cruises for the price point. However, the Holiday sailings tend to be a peak time for travel, potentially impacting the cost and availability. If your ship visits Disney Cruise Line's private island, Castaway Cay, during your Very Merrytime voyage, don't be surprised to find another Christmas tree and various other decorations. The island tram comes close -- it's decorated to resemble a reindeer, complete with antlers and a tail. Similarly, life-size sand sculptures of a snow family make for a fun photo op. If you are booked on a Very Merrytime Disney cruise (basically any cruise during the months of November and December), expect a little added joy throughout your sailing.

Sailing Out of New York City with Disney Cruise Line

Shari is an experienced planner and organizer for Disney vacations, cruising, and U.S. travel. Her family vacation information, reviews, and tips provide insight for moms and dads everywhere. You can read more about her story, including her journey through breast cancer, in the about me page. Disney Cruise Line doesn’t just go all-out on the Christmas decoration on the ship, they decorate their private island too! As you disembark in Castaway Cay, you’ll notice a giant Christmas tree, snow flurries, wreaths, and snowmen. Story Time with Mrs. Claus is a super cute event that occurs on select days of the Disney Christmas cruise.

What Are Disney Cruise Line’s Very Merrytime Holiday Cruises?

Being an exclusive island for Disney ships and passengers only, Castaway Cay has all that children need for one unforgettable Xmas Disney-style vacation. During the first night of our cruise, guests were welcomed into the lobby atrium for the official tree-lighting ceremony. Mickey and friends dance and sing to popular holiday songs as the giant tree is lit. Located on the island of Eleuthera at Lighthouse Point, this vibrant beach retreat will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.

How Much is a Very Merrytime Disney Cruise?

disney christmas cruise

From the intricately themed staterooms and dining venues to the exclusive character encounters. But what truly sets Disney cruises apart are their special-themed sailings! Guests can immerse themselves in the festive spirit with Very Merrytime Cruises. My first cruise with DCL was a Halloween-themed voyage back in 2019, I can confidently say that it was a spellbinding adventure.

Holiday Crafts on a Disney Christmas Cruise

Be sure to check your Disney Cruise Navigator for scheduled times and locations. For families, and children can both take photos with Santa, to help capture memories from this special cruise. All of Disney's Very Merrytime activities and festivities are free.

I love that the ship docks right at the island, so there are no tender ships involved

Poinsettias were spread around the ship and were subtle but a pretty pop of red color. It definitely felt like a holiday atmosphere, and combined with the Disney magic, it was extra special. We enjoyed these character meet & greets, but they were not our primary motivation for taking the cruise. We were expecting something more akin to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Sea. We would’ve even settled for a holiday version of Star Wars Day at Sea, which we experienced earlier in the year and really enjoyed.

See here the Walt Disney's cruise line's Christmas and New Year's Eve special offers of the "Mickey Mouse ships" as itineraries and departure dates, and compare DCL tickets prices per person. And the Christmas decorations at Castaway Cay were icing on the cake! No matter which ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet you are sailing, the whole family will have a blast experiencing the Christmas season with a hint of tropical flair. Before you book a Disney Christmas cruise, you may be wondering what happens on the Very Merrytime cruises. Disney Cruise Line goes all out in their holiday decorations and entertainment. If your sailing takes place on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day, you’ll also enjoy holiday activities such as caroling and special towel animals.

Cruisers will get to experience Mickey and friends introducing their special guests. The Disney Fantasy will embark on a variety of four-night Very Merrytime sailings to The Bahamas, along with longer 6 and 7-night itineraries in November and late December. New Tree Lighting Ceremony – On the first night of all Very Merrytime sailings, you can gather around the three-deck-tall tree in the ship’s atrium for a brand-new tree lighting ceremony.

In addition to the Very Merrytime sailings, Halloween on the High Seas will return during mid-September through October of 2024, offering cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean. New itineraries have been announced for the holiday season of 2024 for mid-November through December. Select cruises will stop at Disney's new Lighthouse Point during the holiday season.

For an extra special experience, try to get a private cabana on Castaway Cay. They are typically available only to those who are platinum or pearl members of Disney Cruise Line’s Castaway Club (or concierge guests), but it’s always worth trying. In the atrium lobby, you’ll also find a life-sized gingerbread house. It was pretty crowded with people taking photos right at the start of the cruise. If traveling on a Disney Christmas cruise, definitely wait until later in the cruise to take a photo, when most guests have finished taking their photos.

With all kinds of fun activities for adults and kids you can enjoy the Christmas Tree lighting, “snow” in the atrium along with holiday crafts and treats. There is no shortage of festive fun on a Disney Very Merrytime Cruise. See below for some of our favorite things to do on a Disney Very Merrytime Sailing. When considering a Christmas cruise, Disney Cruise Line stands out for its unparalleled combination of holiday festivities and Disney magic.

With two brand-new entertainment experiences, Disney characters dressed in jolly new looks and celebratory activities for the whole family, Disney Cruise Line will be filled with the spirit of the holidays this year. DCL's Xmas and New Year specials are a good choice for uniquely themed sailings on all four Disney ships. Families are able to enjoy their vacation in the company of Mickey and Minnie, all their good friends and all the bad villains in the immense family of Disney fun characters. The Walt Disney company's product combines traveling fun family, the Xmas fun itself, the New Years' Eve fireworks at sea, and not to forget the special dinner menus on the ship. All Disney ships are also full to their top decks with themed activities and modern technological innovations. Having experienced the magic of a themed Disney Cruise, I wholeheartedly would recommend it to everyone.
